Rohan Du Plooy Triumphs at the Amashova Durban Classic 2023
Durban witnessed an electrifying finish at the Amashova Durban Classic 2023 as Rohan Du Plooy clinched the men’s champion title under challenging weather conditions. Despite heavy rains, the cyclists' enthusiasm remained undeterred, with Du Plooy crossing the finish line with a beaming smile in a time of 02:20:24.02. Jaedon Terlouw and Gustav Basson secured second and third places, respectively.
In the women’s elite category, Jo van de Winkel emerged victorious, followed closely by Carla Oberholzer and Nadia Stuckler. The race saw over 4,000 cyclists tackling the 106 km course, making it one of South Africa’s premier cycling events.
Du Plooy, previously a runner-up, expressed his joy and acknowledged the challenging weather conditions. “To win the Amashova, the oldest classic road cycling race in the country, is every cyclist’s dream, and certainly a big achievement for me,” he said.
Amashova race director Annie Batchelder celebrated the remarkable turnout and thanked sponsors, volunteers, and the local community for their invaluable support. “The success of the Amashova Durban Classic Race would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors, volunteers, and the local community. Their commitment to the event has been invaluable, and we are grateful for their contribution,” she said.
