Chris Jooste Dominates the 2023 Cape Town Cycle Tour
Chris Jooste delivered a spectacular performance at the 2023 Cape Town Cycle Tour, claiming victory in the Men’s Elite racing category on Sunday, March 12. Jooste's winning time of 02:36:14 marked a significant milestone in his career, fulfilling his dream of winning this prestigious event.
Reflecting on his triumph, Jooste remarked, “This is the pinnacle of the sport in South Africa. I’m thrilled with the win.” His strategic prowess was evident throughout the race, particularly when he and the breakaway group capitalized on a headwind to maintain their lead. Jooste credited the strong riders in the breakaway for creating the perfect conditions for victory.
The 109 km coastal route around the Cape Peninsula provided an ideal backdrop for intense racing, with sunny weather and a light southeasterly breeze. Early attacks were characteristic of the race, but the significant break occurred up the challenging Smitswinkel climb. Jooste, along with Andries Nigrini, Jaedon Terlouw, and Daniel Loubser, managed to break away, with Nick James falling back at Hout Bay.
Andries Nigrini, who finished second, recognized the potential for a podium finish when the breakaway solidified. Despite inconsistent cooperation within the break, Loubser’s strategic insights and relentless effort proved invaluable. His knowledge of the course helped the group navigate the conditions and maintain their lead.
As the race approached Chapman’s Peak, the chasing bunch, led by DMS, attempted to close the gap. However, Honeycomb’s Terlouw, the defending champion Marc Pritzen, and their team were unable to bridge the distance. Terlouw’s early sprint for the finish ultimately left him in third place, but he gained valuable experience from his first breakaway effort.
Jooste’s victory is a culmination of his dedication and consistent performance across age categories since his youth. “This is an incredible feeling,” he said. “I’ve won every age category since u/12, so this is amazing.”
The Cape Town Cycle Tour continues to be a celebrated event, attracting thousands of cyclists and spectators. This year's race featured elite and age group categories for men and women, hand cyclists, and tandem riders, along with the debut of a 42 km route.
Event Director David Bellairs praised the participants, stating, “The Cape Town Cycle Tour is a celebration of cycling and the human spirit. The elite categories showcased the passion and dedication of these athletes, and we are proud to have them as part of our event.”
